Voice of reason here: HIV is the VIRUS that can lead to full blown AIDS, and not all HIV positive people, men and women have AIDS. Seriously, AIDS is the last stage of HIV infection before the body succumbs to death due to being overwhelmingly attacked by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus(HIV). I want to repeat that, because it is such a rampant but very false misconception with the public, HIV in and of itself is NOT FATAL. Now, keeping that in mind, if a body is introduced the the HIV infection, and is not treated with medications such as Norvir, Zerit, Crixophan, or Invirase as examples(and there are many more), it can and ultimately will result in Acquired Immunity Deficient syndrome that actually refers to the body's process of dying for lack of a defensive response against the actual HIV infection itself. Therefore, not all, actually, NONE of the people who have HIV have AIDS. I mean that, it's a common misconception and it's just always been wrong wrong wrong! You have AIDS right before you die. You are infected with HIV before you actually transfer into the category of dying of AIDS related complex. So HIV is now, and more so all the time, being treated as a chronic illness rather than a fatal illness. To be fair, in Africa and other nations of the world and indeed in the United States, it is more than often fatal to those who can not afford the very very expensive drugs that are absolutely vital to maintain a healthy life living with HIV. Yes, it is contagious and I'm sure you already know how so. But know also that HIV is an extremely fragile virus. Beyond the warmth of the human body, it lives for very short periods of time in the cold of room temperature air. Almost immediately upon exposure to such, it begins to die. There are folks who have now lived 25 years with HIV. Some of them with, some of them without adequate medications to control it. Some people have HIV and never know it. Their bodies simply "contain" the infection for reasons scientists have and still are studying the cause of. There are people who have managed to go through all the different treatments attempted through the years and are now taking one pill a day called, "Atriplet"(sp?) instead of what used to be up to 32 pills a day! The point is, HIV is not a death sentence no more than Cancer is anymore. Yes, there are exceptions..... Liver and pancreas cancer is almost always fatal. The same can be said for certain degrees of HIV infection. I've tried really hard here to be factual and helpful and hope, beyond what was written beforehand in the answers I'm sure are above me, that you've reached mine....

It could be from few months to 25-30 years This depends on many factors, any person of any race, sex, social-economic status, sexuality should be tested for HIV/AIDS at least once a year if sexually active. That being said, being HIV positive is no longer a death sentence. HIV/AIDS medications are miracle drugs compared to what was given back in the 80's and early 90's. Since HAART therapy was introduced in 1996, the medications have improved drastically. This is considered more of a chronic condition than a life threatning condition. Medication has prolonged the lives of many people. As long as a patient adheres to medication and eats healthy, exercises and doesnt smoke they can live a normal lifespan. Each year newer and better meds come down the pipeline and the outlook for poz people is excellent. Instead of using HIV/AIDS as an excuse to die, I think it is an opportunity to change to a healthier lifestyle. Unfortunatley the general public has many misconceptions on the disease and many social stigmas still exist. Please go to the following websites for more information. Poz.com and Thebody.com are excellent resources for learning more about this illness. There is a community out there for HIV poz people through these websites. Many HIV positive people are very kind loving people who havent done anything wrong. Do people choose to catch the flu virus? No. Do people choose to get cancer? No. Do people choose to get arthritis? No. Nobody chooses HIV...Even though some people in society would like to throw the blame at homosexuals and drug users, the truth is , anyone can aquire this disease. Get tested, knowledge is power. Don't be afraid to know the truth. The truth always prevails.
4 :
It depends. How soon was it caught after infection? Some people have been infected 10-12 years before they ever test and don't know that they are infected. These people have shortened their lives but not knowing. I just read a article that if someone was newly diagnosed in 2008 that they could have a normal life expectancy IF they were on their medications and took them as prescribed, got plenty of rest, ate well, exercised. My partner has been HIV+ for over 25 years, and still doing well.
5 :
These days, many people who have HIV can live longer, healthier, and increase the amount of time between diagnosis of HIV and diagnosis of AIDS. It is difficult to say exactly how long, though, because length of life would depend on how healthy the person was before getting HIV, how their body is responding to the virus, how their body is responding to the treatment, and whether or not they are following their doctor's instructions about treatment.

HIV/AIDS

HIV/AIDS...............................?
Just answer these questions please, i don't want a whole novel on info. LOL:) 1. Is HIV infection the same as AIDS? Why or why not? 2.What causes HIV infection? 3.How do ppl get HIV? 4.What are the symptoms of HIV? 5.How can I tell if i have HIV? 6.How can i protect myself from HIV?

6. dont do it
2 :
no hiv is not the same as aids...it does progress to it if it is not properly treated, The Hiv infection is spreaded through unprotected sex or any way blood is transfused like a needle, symptoms can take as long as 7 years to receive, you can tell by getting TESTED, protect yourself with safe sex and thinking
3 :
1. NO - HIV is prior to AIDS, you may or may not develop AIDS from HIV. 2. Swapping of blood/semen through open wounds or mucus membranes (eyes, genetals,, etc.) 3. Sex, dirty needles, blood transfusions (back in the day), freak accidents involving blood and bad luck 4. They may take years to show up, your immune system gets weak. 5. Get a blood test done by a doctor. 6. Use condoms, be monogomous with sex partners, know who you are sleeping with and their sexual history (as much as possible), use only sterilized needles, or none at all. 7. Am I doing your homework for you?
4 :
You get infected with HIV and it develops in later stages to AIDS. Through semen, blood transmitted from an HIV infected person to another person. A blood test will prove it you have it. Don't have unprotected sex, don't exchange fluids with others.]
5 :
1. You contract HIV (the virus) and that eventually turns into AIDS which is a condition. 2. Sexual intercourse including oral can cause it 3. From sex like in 2. 4. Reduced white blood cell count and other things related to a weakened immune system except these symptoms wont show up until it turns to aid. 5. go get checked at the doctor 6. use a condom everytime you have sex
6 :
no it is not the same it is one is just a virus that has no effect reall on the body th othe is aquired hince the A which means it is doing what it does and breaking down the immune system I dont know what causes it but you get it from blood, semen, vaginal fluid, anal fluid( I think) and breast milk Any way you might come in cotact with theses fluids ids a way to contract it there are no spytoms of hiv , well they say slight flu symptoms but you would never know and sometimes people have hiv for like 20 years before it becomes aids get tested dont come in contact with these fluids, well no straight contact, condoms gloves stuff like that
7 :
1. No, they are both different. Human immunodeficiency virus and Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome both can combine but are different sti's. 2. Sexual Intercourse without a condom. 3. When not using a condom. 4. Look On Wikipedia. 5. Look On Wikipedia. 6. Condom, usual protection. Consult Partner
8 :
1, hiv is the beginning form of aids 2,contaminated blood mixing or sexual fluids main transfers for humans 3,mother can give child and same as the two listed above 4,Diarrhea, Fever, Fatigue, Headache Mouth sores, including candidal infection, Muscular stiffness or aching, Rash of various types, including seborrheic dermatitis, Sore throat, Swollen lymph glands 5,The HIV ELISA/Western blot test 6,contamination of blood is no longer a threat in hospital, but unsafe sex and sharing needles can cause transfer
9 :
transfer of blood, semen or saliva (litres of saliva). Aids is fully blown, HIV is just the virus that you can carry with no symptoms. Blood tests are the only way to ttell if you have HIV. Leisions on the skin is the easiest way to tell you have AIDS Practice safe sex. (wear a condom, or get your partner(s) to all wer condoms. Dont share needles if you are injecting drugs Sorry they are not in order
10 :
HIV can lead to AIDS but is not the same based on T-cell count most of the time having sex or sharing needles with someone HIV+ unprotected sex or sharing needles there usually aren't any go get a test, it's the only way to know. use condoms for sex, only have sex with 1 partner both testing negative. no sex at all
11 :
HIV is the virus that is transmitted initially. AIDS is not a virus it is what happens after your immune system has broken down to a weak state. Over 90% of people get HIV from sexual intercourse penile-vagina or anal. Although oral sex is a theoretical risk there are no documented cases to date from oral sex, dirty needles. Remember if your sexually active get tested for all std's regularly and use condoms correctly this may sound elementary but most anyone that has contracted HIV from protected sex was because protection was not used correctly. Symptoms could be none at all til years later or you could getting the flu, oral thrush, enlarged lymph nodes, night sweats. For more research the following links might be helpful
12 :
1.HIV infection and causes the AIDS. 2.HIV infection kills the red blood cells and the infection develops in our body. 3.People get the HIV with sexual relation ship with a HIV person and 4.HIV persons blood transfers to other NON- HIV persons. 4.symptoms are up to six months are one year you will be very healthy without a small head hack and fever just you feel like you don't know what is unhealthy. 5.Go and consult the doctor to check weather you have HIV are not.If you have HIV then no need to tell any one except your parents/friends who can understand you very well. 6.We cant cure the HIV but we can avoid the HIV.
13 :
NO HIV is NOT the same as AIDs! You have AIDs when your CD4's fall below 200,or,you get 3 oportunistic infections's at the same time.ie,amonia,thrush,ect..If your CD4's R above the 200 level then your considered HIV+.Normal CD4 levels range from 600-1,200 for ave human.2&3)HIV is caused by blood on blood transfer-ie...IDU drug use(sharing needles),blood transfusion,UNSAFE SEX with a HIV+ person,Mother to baby transmission during birth.4)Flu like symptom's,night sweats, rapid weight loss,fatigue.5).Although these are usually shortlived this is Y so many peoples miss these signs= ie...think they have a cold!Get Tested is the ONLY WAY to be sure you are HIV+,or NOT HIV+!6)Safe Sex WITH A CONDOM,NO sharing of needles or cookers,NO Breast milk from an HIV+ female!!!GET TESTED TODAY!!!50-75% of all new infections are spread by those who do NOT know their HIV+ status!!!get educated-get tested!!!

HIV/AIDS

HIV/AIDS.......................????????????
I have been wondering thins for a long time. If you have two people who have both been tested negative for HIV and AIDS and they gave un-protected sex, can they get the disease? I always thought that if both parnters were negative there was 0% chance of contracting anything. You can't create it through un-protected sex right????? Some people tell me you can...
STDs - 6 Answers

1 :
You are correct. The disease can not appear out of nowhere, you can only get it from someone who has it.
2 :
Those people are idiots. HIV and AIDS cannot just spontaneously happen. You can test negative to some ,like genital herpes, if you don't show any signs, but that doesn't mean your partner cannot contract it.
3 :
You are correct. If both people are negative and in a monogamous relationship, you cannot get HIV/AIDS from one another. In other words, you can't get it from someone who doesn't have it.
4 :
With HIV there is an incubation period from the time of infection to the time when the viral load increases to the point that it is detectable in the blood, In this way HIV can and HAS BEEN spread by people who have tested negative for the virus. In a monogamous relationship an initial test and a follow-up test after allowing enough time to pass for incubation can definitively rule out infection. Throw in another partner and all bets are off!
5 :
If both partners have 2 negative HIV tests 6 weeks apart then the risk is zero. If there are not 2 neg tests there is a very small posibility that one partner could have been infected but in the window period (the period between infection anf the test becoming pos max 6-8 weeks with current tests)
6 :
HIV (virus that can lead to AIDS) is not created just by 2 people having sex. You can not get HIV from someone who does not have HIV. In order for either person to get HIV, the other person must have HIV in the first place.

How can you get HIV/AIDS other then human-human transmission

How can you get HIV/AIDS other then human-human transmission?
I know that you can get HIV/AIDS from other people but how did this first happen? How do they hypothesize the first human got it? You can't get it from someone without it.. right? What else can give it to you? I have heard that humans might have got it from monkeys. Monkeys spit at you and you ingest it.. you know what happens.

It is a proven fact that it was a virus that affected apes, it then mutated and jumped from apes to humans. It was probably first transmitted from apes bites, scratches etc. It's hard to say who the first person was because the disease was ignored for a while before it was finally given a name. Also since ti was first passed on in remote areas it was hidden at first until it was wide spread. It's turned into such a pandemic because of false information in the 80's. At first it was only advertised as a disease for blacks/gays/drug addicts because governments didn't listen to the medical industry. So people who had it without knowing were constantly passing it on. Now the problem is also false information, there are enough people on YA who think you can get it just by touching someone. And the fact that the most highly infected areas such as Africa don't have access to proper medical treatment, condoms, or also information. The health administer for Africa tells it's people that garlic and onions prevent HIV. You can only get it through blood or vaginal secret/semen contact or through mother milk/birth/HIV infected mother during pregnancy. Saliva does not contain the virus. So through needles, blood transfusions in less developed parts of the world and unprotected sex are your only problems. No it doesn't come from no where, a person has to have HIV to pass it on.
2 :
The origin of AIDS and HIV has puzzled scientists ever since the illness first came to light in the early 1980s. For over twenty years it has been the subject of fierce debate and the cause of countless arguments, with everything from a promiscuous flight attendant to a suspect vaccine programme being blamed. So what is the truth? Just where did AIDS come from? Find Out Here : http://www.avert.org/origin-aids-hiv.htm
3 :
In many countries they eat apes for food. It's very possible to get scratched and then blood into your wound when hunting with a knife against an ape, they're 5 times stronger than humans. Wendy

Hi JB, This question is difficult to answer. Below, I have given some of the reasons. There is no one answer which fits all! 1. If the HIV strain infecting the patient is weak then the patient will live a long time. If the HIV strain is virulent then the patient will live a shorter time. 2. If the patient's defences (immune systems) are strong then he will a long time. If his/her defences are compromised by other conditions his/her life will be shorter.
