How did HIV/AIDS ACTUALLY start

How did HIV/AIDS ACTUALLY start?
Where did the disease come from? and why is it spreading like wildfire?

the answer is pretty long, look up fr the facts on this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aids#History
2 :
I'm not really sure on the details, but I do know it started off with a group of people and they were given medicine to fight it off. You know how the doctor tells you to finish the medicine even when you begin to feel better? They missed that memo, and stopped. The disease was still in their bodies, they just felt better, so they stopped the medication and spread it then the disease became something became stronger than the medicines used to treat it therefore became something they couldn't combat
3 :
it started with monkeys. It was transfered to humans when a human had sexual intercourse with an infected monkey, then it spread thru the human community. it can only be transmitted one way, bodily fluid transfer. KINDA SICK - AIN'T IT!!! HIV/AIDS is a virus, antibiotics do not kill a virus.
4 :
HIV is a member of the genus Lentivirus, all of which produce slow, incessant infections of the immune system. These viruses have been found in several animals, including cats, sheep, horses and cattle, and monkeys, where the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) has been isolated. It is now genearlly accepted that HIV is a descendant of SIV because certain strains of SIV bear a very close resemblance to HIV-1 and HIV-2, the two types of HIV. HIV-2 corresponds to the SIV strain found in the sooty mangabey (or green monkey), which is indigenous to western Africa. Until recently, the origin for the more virulent HIV-1 was more difficult to place. The closest counterpart was to SIV found in chimpanzees. However, this virus still had certian significant differences from HIV-1. ....research was done, blah blah.... and they concluded that wild chimps had been infected simultaneously with two different SIVs, which had recombined to form a third virus that could be passed on to other chimps, and more significantly, was capable of infecting humans and causing AIDS. ...we traced the two viruses back to monkeys...and they believe that the hybridization took place inside chimps that had become infected with both strains of SIV after they hunted and killed the two smaller species of monkeys. (Yes, some chimps do hunt and kill animals). The most likely scenario is that in the 1930's, HIV-1 jumped to humans who were eating "bush meat" (the term used for monkey meat). In fact, transfer of retroviruses from primates to hunters can still be documented. HIV-2 jumped from the sooty mangabey in the 1960s. The sudden arrival of HIV in the 1980s could have been due to increased international air travel. The use of blood transfusions and intravenous drug use, both of which increased in the 1970s, could also have contributed to the emergence of HIV. Both have been a documented source of HIV transmissions as well as for other diseases, such as hepatitis C, between humans. It is doubtful we will ever know exactly how HIV evolved, but current scientific evidence appears quite strong. --- The reason it is spreading like wild fire is because of the lack of safe sexual practices, especially in places like Africa. Condoms are viewed as the devil's work by some religious groups that do relief work. You've probably never been to Africa, but if you do go you may be shocked. It's common practice for the men to have several sexual partners in a week (they thought nothing of 10 different partners). There's also a rumor that sex with a virgin will cure you of your HIV/AIDS so children are getting raped and becoming infected. It's sad, but it's just a lack of protective measure being taken. And it is SO HARD to get them to understand why it's important to use condoms. The women would come up and ask for some when they realized the dangers of unprotected sex, but by them time they got them it was too late anyway. It's just their way of life. It's difficult to introduce these things and expect them to be used. It's just so common that it'll take ages to finally get rid of HIV/AIDS, if it's even possible. Babies are being born with it, so the lifecycle continues.
5 :
It is closely related to a virus found in chimps, and is believed to have come from there. the best theory i have heard is that it spread to humans from them eating chimpanzee meat. But transmitted when they cut themselves prepairing the meat, probably couldn't be caught from eating cooked meat. This happened at least 50 years ago, how much more than 50 years ago depends who you ask. A couple of the things they think helped it spread through africa were early vaccination campains reusing needles, and truckers and other migratory workers seeing different sex workers in each town. It spread within Africa till about the 70s, then in the 1980s a strange new disease was noticed among gay men in the USA, it probably spread through that population fastest in that group because heterosexuals who wwere having permiscuous sex were often using condoms to prevent pregnancy. Now with increased safe sex among gay men in the USA and Europe these poplulations are at as much risk as they once were. Now there are a few different transmission patters, which sub-group is most effected depends on the country. Sex workers (in countries with poor regulation of sex work or poor availability of safe sex stuff), of IV drug users, prisoners, or some countries it is pretty much in all sexually active adults. The "spreading like wild fire" is probably because people can pass it on to a lot of other people before they even know they have it.

How long before you notice HIV/AIDS symptoms

How long before you notice HIV/AIDS symptoms?
If I have oral sex( but he didn't finish) with a guy, 8 years ago should I be worried that he could have given me HIV? Would I have noticed it by now? I know this is really late to be finding out. I have made a doctors appt, but it's not for a another week.

First let me help ease your mind. Oral Sex is very low risk and especially if "he didn't finish". People who are infected with HIV can go 10-12 years with out any symptoms. It's good you are testing now, so don't stress to much. If you have AIDS service organizations in your area some of the test for free, just call and find out their walk in hours.
2 :
awhile.
3 :
HIV symptoms 2-10 weeks after exposure. AIDS up to 10 years. The symptoms are different in both cases.
4 :
Oral sex carries a risk of 1 to 10000 for a single episode. That means it is extremely low. There is a theoretical risk of HIV transmission through oral sex. Relax, you are most probably negative. You cannot rely on symptoms as they are not indication for HIV. The only way is to get tested. Most people do not even show any symptom when they are infected. The symptoms mean nothing. Good luck with your appointment and I am sure you will be fine.

How close is the scientific world is to cure for HIV/AIDS

How close is the scientific world is to cure for HIV/AIDS?
What is the prospect for Vaccines in the nearest future?
Infectious Diseases - 10 Answers

1 :
a LOT more people need to open their eyes to this.
2 :
About as close as they are to finding a cure to the common cold. They have learned how to repress it, but not prevent its spread.
3 :
NOT CLOSE ENOUGH BUT SCIENTIST ARE STILL TRYING AND IT REALLY HARD THESE DAYS. STUDENT AT HARVARD UNIVERSITY MEDICAL SCHOOL.
4 :
maybe if everyone quit sleeping around so much that might help
5 :
We have been having much success with HIV/AIDS since the early 80's and will continue to do so naturally without dibilitating drugs. http://www.glycoscience.org type in hiv check out what else we have been doing http://www.glycoresource.com what you need for HIV/AIDS is bulk ambrotose powder it aids the body in cellular communi cation.
6 :
Prospects are not very bright today. The HIV virus mutates very easily, the protein coat is unsatisfactory for a vaccine...We can hope that in the future, something will develop, but until then, raincoats remain the best friend of those who have sex. And yes, you will hear all the protestations from guys who want to play bare, but it is your life, not theirs they are playing with. Today's problem is worse than those about 10 years or more ago...we see meds that greatly lengthen life with those infected with HIV...therefore, people practice risky sex thinking "I can take a pill if I get it." The sad truth is ... this is a myth. Pills work on most, but not all. Pills have some serious side effects. The virus can mutate and become immune to the meds. All in all, an ounce of prevention is far better than a pound of cure.
7 :
There are a few clinical trials going on at this moment. One of them is with monkeys injected with a vaccine and then injected with the aids virus via rectum. So far the monkeys have not developed HIV, yet. Testing on humans is only now beginning and it will take a few years to see if this vaccine works and what the side effects (if any) can be. Then it will take a few more years of a larger study until FDA then approves of its use for the population in general. I personally don't think it will be around until 10-15 years from now even if it does work. I only pray to God that something will be discovered soon because the mortality rate is still very high. Loosing someone to aids is very depressing and sad. Just like cancer or any slow deteriorating disease...
8 :
Check out this article http://www.jimmunol.org/cgi/content/full... I don't know what level of education you are at, and it maybe over your head, so heres the breakdown. There is a novel treatment being investigated called RNAi. It makes use of an old part of immune system, to break down virus RNA. It involves transfecting cells with siRNA's which with the help of some cellular proteins, is able to destroy specific mRNA's ie viral ones. This paper (see address above) is about some research into using this to treat HIV/AIDs and shows some promising results. However, don't get your hopes of a cure up, because this is still a very long way away.
9 :
I don't think anyone really knows the answer to that question. I'm sure one day there will be a cure.
10 :
There are several natural anti-virals out there that are proven to work very well. One is colloidal silver which is known to kill over 650 types of viruses, bacteria, yeasts, and fungi. Another is olive leaf extract which has been researched successfully by an Israeli virologist and grapefruit seed extract and oregano oil. Don't take my word for it go online and research these products and decide for yourself.

What are the chances of catching HIV/AIDS

What are the chances of catching HIV/AIDS?
In about a year and a half I might be going to Zambia to work with HIV/AIDS orphans. Since I know nothing about STDs what are the chances of me catching them and how would I catch them?
STDs - 9 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Gee, I guess that depends on how much you have unprotected sex...?
2 :
HIV/AIDS is not only caught through sex but also by exchanging of bodily fluids i.e. saliva, tears etc. But even so the chances are supposed to be extremely low
3 :
ive asked that question once. you dont get it by masturbation, although theres a chance you can in mutual masturbation. that involes 2 persons. if you have sex with a virus positive person, then youre cooked. sharing needles. drugs. wtf.
4 :
Then you have a year and a half to educate yourself. Yahoo Answers is not a suitable source of factual information for this type of situation. http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/resources/factsheets/ http://www.avert.org/aids-zambia.htm http://www.usaid.gov/our_work/global_health/aids/Countries/africa/zambia.html
5 :
Depends on the kind of sex, what genders are involved, and who's harboring the infection. In general, unprotected heterosexual vaginal intercourse has a low transmission rate (in the neighborhood of 1/300-1/1000 chance of infection per act of intercourse). Females are more readily infected by male partners than males are infected by female partners (aka easier to transmit the virus from male->female than female->male). Unprotected anal intercourse (male-male or male-female) significantly increases the infection rate (1/10 to 1/100 infection risk per act of intercourse are commonly reported). There is some thought that transfer of infected macrophages is required to transmit the infection, and that transmission of free virions alone is not sufficient or less effective in establishing new infection (which may account for the relatively low transmission rates). Lot of work going on here right now. http://www.whfhhc.com/HIV/44466.htm
6 :
I'd say they are very slim unless you have unprotected sex while there. Sounds like a very good cause and should be a real adventure at the same time. I'm also sure that whomever you will be working with will educate you on precautions and risk regarding HIV/AIDS. Good luck with your work experience.
7 :
First lets talk about the routes of infection by HIV/AIDS. It can be transferred by sexual intercourse. The person who would be most likely to get HIV from intercourse is which ever partner is the receiver due to the friction of intercourse on the mucous membrane(anus or vagina)So I would avoid having sex if you want to be safe from that route, if you do have sex wear a condom but thats not 100% safe. The next major route is through blood to blood contact. That being said anytime you come into contact with any kind of blood other than your own you should be wearing gloves. This is called Body Substance Isolation. Now lets say you do get some blood with HIV on your skin. Want to hear how simple it is to get rid of? Warm water and soap. HIV is one of the easiest diseases to prevent. If you were to have a direct blood to blood contact I would recommend the first action you take to pour hydrogen peroxide on the cut. It is a great antiseptic. Then immediately seek medical attention. They can give you some shots of interferon that if taken early enough can reduce the risk of infection even if some infected blood were to enter your blood stream. Saliva is another mode of infection although it is much rarer than the other two. Just don't share food or drink and you'll be fine. The amount of HIV harbored by the salvia is minimal. The best thing you can do is always carry a pair or two of gloves. Use them anytime you would come into contact with a bodily fluid.
8 :
Most of the people here do not know what they are talking about. HIV is ONLY transmitted by unprotected vaginal/anal sex, from mother to child, from blood transfusion and from sharing IV for drugs. I am ABSOLUTELY surprised by the one of the comment that says it is transmitted by tear. If you do not have any unprotected sexual encounter there, you will not catch HIV. HIV is not transmitted by casual contacts and not transmitted by environmental surfaces. Before you go, talk to your family doctor and he/she will tell you what to do. Most probably he/she will repeat the same things that I told you. Good luck in Africa. Must be very interesting to be there!
9 :
You see its all right you can get it from ONLY contacting with bodily fluids. Saliva and tears are not enough to infect. But blood, semen and vaginal fluids need only 1-2 drops to get you infected and well the timer will be ticking. If you won't contact their blood, semen, vaginal fluid then your fine. And NO CONDOM DOSENT HELP THERE IS A 20% CHANCE CONDOM CAN RIP OR BREAK.

How close are they coming to finding a cure for hiv/aids

How close are they coming to finding a cure for hiv/aids?
I know that HIV is no longer a death sentence, but there HAS to be something, somewhere out there to cure this horrible disease. So how are researchers doing?

There isnt actually that much work being done on it compared with cancer, and Alzheimer's and other diseases that affect more affluent countries, and arent sexually transmitted. As terrible as it sounds to say this, usually when you get HIV its your own fault, and societies resources are better spent else where.
2 :
so far none of this have a definite answer yet. i say it would take a longer years to have a good solution on this HIV problem. for me the only way to prevent having HIV is to let you partner go to a hospital and check if it is positive or negative
3 :
I think the government has a cure already, but won't reveal it. I think they regard HIV/AIDS as "population control", unfortunately.
4 :
There are already cures out there, just look for them and be open to possibilities. Go to the bookstores and look under alternative therapies, you will see that there are numerous books telling you how to to turn HIV+ to HIV-. Pharmaceutical cures are based on synthetic drugs, but there are natural cures that cant be released as cures because they cant be patented and money cant be made off of them. Believe me or not, but what purpose would I have for lying to you.
5 :
usually when you get HIV its your own fault
6 :
not close enough
7 :
Here's a good article on AIDS research: http://www.squidoo.com/AIDS
8 :
There is a cure for HIV/AIDS. The patent number is 5676977, it's public information, just visit the website: www.uspto.gov and look it up. The government is suppressing this information from the public, that's why you don't see it in the news. People are already petitioning to have this patent pushed for trial testing, and keep in mind this patent has been around since 1996. There are many activist that are trying to get information out there to the public about the truth, to name a few: Dr. Robert Strecker, Dr. Leonard Horowitz, and Dr. Boyd E Graves. Unfortunately our government is run on greed and lies, people seem to think that they will take care of us. The truth is that it is really up to the common man to make this country a better place. If you really want to know the truth about AIDS, please check out the links below. I encourage anybody who reads this to do there own independent research and question everything. There is an abundance of good information on the Internet, use it to your advantage. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6068096409136912010 http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=Leonard+Horowitz&hl=en&emb=0#

How can I get funds to help finance activities to help stop HIV/Aids in SC (29150)

How can I get funds to help finance activities to help stop HIV/Aids in SC (29150)?
I work for a non profit agency that has suffered funding cuts which limits the educational activities that we provide for the community and surrounding areas. HIV/AIDS is a disease that we simply can not allow to consume us.Can anybody tell me how and from whom I can recover some funding without going thru so much "red tape" (paperwork) to get? I would appreciate your serious input.

I do grant research all the time. Yahoo! is the best search engine. Try typing in Grants AIDS South Carolina or just Grants South Carolina and check out some of the website that come up to see which ones suit you. SC may also have some website you can find this way where they have one form for like 50 grants - that's a goldmine. Happy hunting!

Are the statistics on HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B even accurate

Are the statistics on HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B even accurate?
Because apparently, if you contract HIV, you may not feel any symptoms for up to 10 years (or at least minor ones that won't make you think you need to take a HIV test). And yet, you'll still be a carrier and be passing it on and on. The same with Hepatitis B. So, currently there are 40,000,000 people in the world infected. But is this even an accurate estimation if there are potentially so many patients out there who are unaware they carry it?
Infectious Diseases - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
No, it's impossible for the statistics to be 100% accurate. Plus, take into consideration all the people who know they have AIDs and don't or can't report it. And the numbers are growing daily, so any report is bound to be behind.
