I think if the mother/father isn't infected, they don't do the test. But i think you could ask the hopital to do it if you want to.
2 :
I suppose if the mother thinks she has it...
3 :
why would they have aids. Do you have them.
4 :
only if the mother tests positive. otherwise there is no need. i would think
5 :
If it isn't a practice at your hospital it should be. Be sure to ask your Pediatrician and ob/gyn to make sure that your baby get's tested.'
6 :
In the state where I live it is mandatory for the mother to be tested before giving birth as there are things that can be done a the time of delivery to stop HIV from being passed to the unborn child.
7 :
They don't unless there is a problem with the mother or if she has suspicions about the father.
8 :
No. If the mother is HIV+ the baby should be followed with serial tests every 3-6 months for about 2 years.
9 :
They did when i had mine, you should check in the hospital where you are having the baby though.
10 :
It doesn't work on a new born. Even the studies base their results on tests that people aren't sure of. The problem is that very few HIV tests actually look for the virus itself. Instead almost all look for immune system markers. The problem with doing this in a newborn is that newborns have immune system markers that are similar to the mother's at birth for the first few months. Testing a newborn for such markers is how you tell if a mother has a disease, not how you tell if a disease transfers to the baby.
11 :
I don't think there is a nation wide standard. BUT, if you have even remotely think you or your husband may be affected, you should insist on having the test done on you and your baby.
12 :
Only if one or both of the parents possibly have it. They don't even test babies if they have had a transfusion anymore because the donated blood is already tested before it is given. If the mother thinks she has it there is medicine that can be given to her to reduce the risks of the baby catching it during the pregnancy and mainly during birth.
13 :
In most states, the mother is tested while pregant unless you specificaly state that you do not want to be tested (they can not force you to take an HIV/Aids test). If the mother did test positive, they would have put her on medication to help lessesn the chance of the baby being infected at birth. If you feel you might have been exsposed since your last test or you were not tested at all, please let the hospital know. rr
14 :
you have to sign a consent for HIV testing. otherwise they cannot test your child. laws are very strict regarding HIV testing and handling of HIV status information.
15 :
yes
16 :
With my 2 kids they tested them for everything before we left the hospital. Me and my husband don't have aids or anything else , but the hospital performed all of that. I guess if you request it they would do it

Do you think pandemics like HIV AIDS and malaria are hurting the economy? how?
Not in the sense of the money being put towards relief efforts though. Do you think that if we just let HIV/AIDS be (globally) that it would hurt the economy?

Malaria, HIV and AIDS must be prevented to cause an epidemic because mankind can be extinguished from this earth.
2 :
Absolutely, 1. It is a drain on the healthcare systems of other countries, which can barely afford these services when times are good, put simply Africa could be a whole lot more prosperous without hurting anyone's economy. A prosperous set of African nations obviously needs less debt relief and can become a viable set of trade partners both to us and towards each other. 2. Having overwhelmed the healthcare systems of these other countries it opens us up for another epidemic H5N1 or some virulent form of Ebola or Marbug to run rampant and simply increases the success of such an organism to cause such a catastrophic pandemic. 3. The immediate effects in the US were fairly dramatic, in that largely the homosexual community was affected, this disproportionately hit "free thinking", "bohemian" types, which also tend to be significantly / disproportionately creative. So we have and will continue to loose the economic benefits of the creativity from that community. 4. Lethality - the HIV virus is easily transmitted through blood or most other bodily fluids however, because HIV is a fairly unstable virus , left unchecked, this WILL eventually lead to a variant that is either airborne or able to successfully survive aerosolization (through sneezing or spitting), then HIV becomes a serious problem for everyone. 5. Longer term, failure to either acknowledge or effectively deal and contain this and other public health problems through EDUCATION and good hygiene / domestic housekeeping or sexual practices, have catastrophic effects on population which in turn causes catastrophic effects on the economy of whatever country fails to implement or acknowledge contraceptive or other such good practices and policies. For instance in Angola when the president was asked about his 3% population growth, he said - "It's not a problem, the problem will be orphanages and depopulation, since 8% of the population (at the time) had HIV" most of sub-Saharan Africa has HIV infection rates approaching 1 in 4 not one in 50 or 1 in 45 as is common in the US. In Thailand and other communities the ratio is moveing from 1 in 4 to approaching 50% (1/2) of some populations (such as sex workers) have HIV / AIDS. which spreads largely unchecked through the serviced community as well as the armed forces of their country. These countries passed the "critical mass" point, and now the general populations are being decimated and the economies suffer negative GDP as a result of religious conviction against contraceptive measures and/or failure to acknowledge the problem as potentially as devistating. Similarly , certain communities HIV is much more prevalent (gays and drug users) however, it is increasingly being found among the heterosexual community and may in fact reach a critical mass point in another segment of the population (college students and sexually non-selective 20 somethings), this would be largely catastrophic to the US economy.

What are evident physical signs of hiv/aids

What are evident physical signs of hiv/aids?
I get really paranoid with the idea of ever meeting someone with it and engaging in sexual acts. I need to know what are some evident signs in a person. Physically what they look like.

Unfortunately, there are none. Stay paranoid about safe sex, though. That's really your best defense.
2 :
Weight loss, and rapidly. Capozi's sarcoma which are dark aras under the skin usually seen first on the face and the forearms. Inability to fight off or frequent obreaks of infections or viruses. See a doctor or go to a clinic to ask for a free HIV test , it is totally confidential.
3 :
there really are none unless the disease is progressing. You can carry the HIV virus but not be infected by it. Use a condom no matter what!!!!
4 :
If in check they will look like anyone else. The physical manifestations of the disease take a while, depending on the strength of the immune system it could be quite a while before the virus is able to overcome the immune system and cause the symptoms associated with the virus. They will be contagous during this time however. Since HIV effects the immune system you would see manifestiation of common contagous elements. The initial infection would usualy present itself with a feever and flu like symptoms. Left unchecked you would likely see bacterial infections, thrush, kaposi's sarcoma, chanchor sores, dermatitus, TB, herpies, and waisting. The look test is not going to help you untill they progress pretty far. If you have any reason to be concerned use protection and know your partner well.
5 :
just get to know someone and don't fool around with just anybody. lord only knows whose got what nowadays. be safe out there.

Try to imagine ... horrific is an, applicable word. On UNICEF, see the 1200 number of orphans and realize it's thousands - so, 1.25 million. The Wikipedia website gives information for you to consider re some food items. You, apparently, didn't see the World Vision telecast which, I seem to recall, was mid-December. The Republic of South Africa has, until fairly recently, attempted to hide the correct statistics by publishing information based upon specific groups living within the country. With so many families affected, some villages may have 25-30% of the children under 15, counted among the orphans. When a community is living in severe poverty, not much can be found in the rubbish-heap. Americans have their stomach turn when someone mentions eating worms, or roaches, but for millions across the world, these provide some degree of protein. If you and 3 friends each saved 25c a day, you could sponsor a World Vision child who has been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Many charities spend as much as 50% on self-maintenance - WV spends 14%. This is not a solicitation - is info' only as I contribute to Heifer International (last year bought half a water buffalo, chickens and ducks). Goats are good for a gift to Africa and your parents might prefer you buy most of the shares for a goat, in their name, ($120 for 100% of the goat) than have you get them gifts throughout the year. Sorry - appears I haven't been too helpful ... perhaps you might call your local library to ask where to search. There are many usgov sites which should have info' for you as well as newspaper archives - see last two: the Telegraph and Times are best; is a dozen years since I subscribed to the Int'l Herald Tribune ... used to be good.

What are the safe and available HIV /aids treatment?
Is it possible to have a normal living once HIV treatment is successful?

I believe I've read that the top HIV/AIDS doctor (Dr. Anthony Fauci ) says that a new drug that prevents the virus from entering the vulnerable cells is the best treatment.

Are there attractive men who go around spreading hiv/aids to women on purpose

Are there attractive men who go around spreading hiv/aids to women on purpose?
I mean, the fact that he is attractive means that he has plenty of women willing to sleep with him. And what about strippers(I mean, some pretty nasty stuff goes on at hen parties)

Yeah. How do you believe it is still spreading...Ugly people dont JUST get HIV/AIDS..... Kind of a dumb question- don't mean to be rude. Some ppl spread it intentially and others may not know they have it. thats why your supposed to get your 6 months check up. && stay up to date with your health
2 :
yea probably. Thats why you should be careful and get tested
3 :
I think the lesson here is that you should only sleep with unattractive guys. Otherwise it's just too dangerous.

If someone knew nothing about HIV/AIDS what would you tell them to educate them about the disease

If someone knew nothing about HIV/AIDS what would you tell them to educate them about the disease?
How would I describe the virus to somebody that knows nothing about it.

I would say that it is a virus you get from bodily fluids. You can get it from vaginal fluid, semen, breast milk, and blood. It attacks the immune system, especially the CD4 cells until the host is too weak to fight off illnesses. When a person's CD4 count reaches 200 or less it is considered AIDS. I would also tell them that you can prevent HIV by practicing safe sex and not sharing needles. Also, tell them about the treatments they now have that are helping people live longer healthier lives with HIV.

Doesnt seem like there is a cure for HIV/AIDS when you see Magic johnson

Doesnt seem like there is a cure for HIV/AIDS when you see Magic johnson?
He has had it for close to twenty years now and he looks fine. Whats the deal? Have they made any major advancements in curing or slowing the virus?

There are drugs called anti-retrovirals which prevent the progression of HIV. But they are extremely expensive, which is why he seems to be the only one infected with HIV and still doing well.
2 :
I saw a year-old documentary about this gay dude in San Francisco who's had HIV for 22 yrs and though he's skinny from it, he's otherwise in ok health. He said he'd been on different drug trials since the disease first came into light. So that's one explanation. They say that HIV constantly metamorphoses with stronger rejection to current drugs. That's why pharmaceuticals keep having to invent newer drugs. On the flipside, it could be when Magic was first diagnosed that he may have received a false positive, only to be discovered several years after the fact. But seeing all the charity work he does in it's name then maybe nobody wants to blow the lid off what could be the truth. Anyway, it's just a theory. But I like the one South Park came up with better. :-)
3 :
There is no cure, but yes, there have been major advances in slowing the virus, particularly HAART (Highly Active Anti Retroviral Therapy) which has been available since about 1996. It is not a cure, but it allows many people with HIV to preserve their health for many years and live relatively normal lives. This treatment is available for nearly everyone in Western countries who needs it, and is increasingly used in the third world, too. It is not just for rich people with HIV, like Magic. Not everyone needs to use HAART as soon as they find out they have HIV, and a small percentage of people (long term non progressors) may not ever need to use it. If you have HIV you should check with your doctor if and when it is right for you.
4 :
It's not a cure, it's just a medicine that he takes to slow down the virus. It's very expensive. Or, as on south park, you liquify money and inject it into your veins, and THAT is the cure for AIDS.
5 :
When it comes to Magic he is the poster man of what a HIV+ person does that is right. He eats well (healthy foods) he gets plenty of rest, takes his medications as directed, exercises well, a triess to be stress free. By doing all of this he can keep his viral load in check to the point it could be undetectable at times. So yes there are major advances IF people do as they are told to do. My partner has been HIV+ for 25 years and is doing as well, so it's not about his money or fame, it is about doing what he needs to do to lead a healthy life.
6 :
To tell you the truth, the media mentioned that Magic Johnson has been testing negative recently. Also, in a local newspaper they claimed there's a POSSIBILITY that they've found a cure for HIV, but not effective for AIDS. I believe that with the money that he has, he's getting the best treatment out there and possibly even cured. Let's just hope for a cure...
7 :
I agree with Snout 100% and with flowerman (?) for the most part. I would only add to flowerman's response that when you have millions of dollars it is easier to live stress free, eat properly, have the time to exercise. Many people living with HIV in North America are living around the poverty line (and well below) with few choices (read: little money) to address the complementary side of HIV treatment. There are things that everyone can do, but it is easier when you have the money! On another note: there are certain percentage of people living with HIV that are referred to as long term non-progressors (people whose immune systems seem to be able to keep HIV in check and for whom treatment may not be (ever?) needed. I think this is what Snout was referring to, though I may be mistaken
