Try to imagine ... horrific is an, applicable word. On UNICEF, see the 1200 number of orphans and realize it's thousands - so, 1.25 million. The Wikipedia website gives information for you to consider re some food items. You, apparently, didn't see the World Vision telecast which, I seem to recall, was mid-December. The Republic of South Africa has, until fairly recently, attempted to hide the correct statistics by publishing information based upon specific groups living within the country. With so many families affected, some villages may have 25-30% of the children under 15, counted among the orphans. When a community is living in severe poverty, not much can be found in the rubbish-heap. Americans have their stomach turn when someone mentions eating worms, or roaches, but for millions across the world, these provide some degree of protein. If you and 3 friends each saved 25c a day, you could sponsor a World Vision child who has been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Many charities spend as much as 50% on self-maintenance - WV spends 14%. This is not a solicitation - is info' only as I contribute to Heifer International (last year bought half a water buffalo, chickens and ducks). Goats are good for a gift to Africa and your parents might prefer you buy most of the shares for a goat, in their name, ($120 for 100% of the goat) than have you get them gifts throughout the year. Sorry - appears I haven't been too helpful ... perhaps you might call your local library to ask where to search. There are many usgov sites which should have info' for you as well as newspaper archives - see last two: the Telegraph and Times are best; is a dozen years since I subscribed to the Int'l Herald Tribune ... used to be good.
