I have to write a paper on the origin of HIV AIDS, and I need some good general background info. And please no "the US government invent HIV AIDS.." type of answers, not helpful at all.

The best evidence we have so far suggests that HIV evolved from SIV, a similar virus that infects chimps. The likely geographic location of the chimp to human jump is Kinshasa. Wild gorilllas in Southeast Cameroon seem to have the virus that's most like HIV. The means of exposure is unknown. It may have been humans having sex with chimpanzees. It may have been someone who cut themselves with a knife while butchering them. We do not know precisely.
