HIV/AIDS: How long has it been studied

HIV/AIDS: How long has it been studied?
How long have researchers and scientists been studying HIV/AIDS? Is it possible for HIV to always be HIV and not turn into AIDS? What do you think could cure these diseases?

HIV was first recognized in 1981 so it has been a subject of study for nearly 30 yrs now...UNAIDS and the WHO estimate that AIDS has killed more than 25 million people since it was first recognized in 1981, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in recorded history. HIV is thought to have originated in non-human primates in sub-Saharan Africa and was transferred to humans late in the 19th or early in the 20th century.[160] The first paper recognizing a pattern of opportunistic infections characteristic of AIDS was published in 1981. Most untreated people infected with HIV-1 eventually develop AIDS. These individuals mostly die from opportunistic infections or malignancies associated with the progressive failure of the immune system. HIV progresses to AIDS at a variable rate affected by viral, host, and environmental factors; most will progress to AIDS within 10 years of HIV infection: some will have progressed much sooner, and some will take much longer. Treatment with anti-retrovirals increases the life expectancy of people infected with HIV. Even after HIV has progressed to diagnosable AIDS, the average survival time with antiretroviral therapy was estimated to be more than 5 years as of 2005. Without antiretroviral therapy, someone who has AIDS typically dies within a year. So it means that there is a high chance that anybody getting infected will develop AIDS. However,Not all people with HIV get AIDS. However, if a personĂ¢€™s T-Cell numbers drop and the amount of virus in the blood stream rises (viral load), the immune system can become too weak to fight off infections, and they are considered to have AIDS. It is then possible to get sick with diseases that do not usually affect other people. One of these diseases is Kaposi Sarcoma (KS), a rare type of skin cancer. Another is a type of pneumonia called Pneumocystis Carinii Pneumonia (PCP). These diseases can be treated and a personĂ¢€™s T-Cells and viral load can return to healthier levels with the right types of medication. Right now we have drugs that only delay the progression to AIDS and help people maintain a good standard of life. What could possibly cure the diseases is a subject of speculation and even the ebst scientists are working to find and answer to it...

I personally think that this "question" ....is one that the general public can really learn from. I do not personally care about "Tiger Woods", ...or ...any other person in the USA. But, this is a good "public health" learning opportunity for anyone (male or female) who thinks they are in a "committed relationship". We all expect that we can have confidence with a "partner" to be intimate, and that a "committed partner" will not put you at "health risk". I hope Mr. Woods, and any man (or woman) who has "alleged outside affairs" ...will respect their partner enough to wear "protection" if they are going to continue to be "intimate" with another "trusting person". Most of these "women" alleged to have had affairs with Mr. Woods, are basically "bar/party girls" in New York, or Las Vegas....or ..."Porn Stars". BOTH of these groups of women would be "high risk" to have some sort of sexual disease. Whether it be "AIDS, Genital Warts, Herpes, ...or APV...or any of 20 other sexually transmitted diseases or conditions", ......there is no denying that these "at risk women" could have passed something to Mr. Woods, and that ...he has put his partner at risk. Let's hope all people, understand that you do not have the "right" , to willingly put any "partner" in an intimate relationship at risk. Please "respect" other people, and chose not to have "relations", ...if...there is any chance that your actions would harm/infect another person. And if there is a "marriage" (contract), then, my feeling is that "cheating with an outside person", and then, having "unprotected relations" with your spouse....is committing a "Chargeable Crime" of "Felony Endangerment", because....AIDS....kills. We should start charging people for these behaviors, if they willingly infect another....with ANY sexually transmitted disease, where they should have had "prior knowledge" based on behavior. (Of course having something, you are unaware of would not be chargeable.)

Yeah - and I've heard they found Elvis on Mars........... btw - all the money in the world will buy him the necessary drugs to stop his immune system shutting down, so it probably does really mean much (dipstick)

its very unlikly that you'd get it that way there could be a small chance if you were bleeding
2 :
In order for an STD to infect you it must enter your bloodstream. The underneath of your nails is skin so no if you don't have any cuts. You still can get herpes or other sexual contact rashes on any part of your body that comes into contact with it.
3 :
Your hand can be a transport system for bugs from the woman's genitalia if you then touch yourself without washing your hands. If you didn't touch yourself unlikely that you caught anything. The kind of infections that can occur this way are things like warts caused by a viral infection. HIV is VERY unlikely to be transmitted in this way.
4 :
if someone has a blood borne virus like hiv .,they have a responsibility not to run risks with other peoples lives .Its possible you had a tiny cut you did not notic even a scratch is enough .

Does a male and female couple who both have HIV/AIDS still need to have protective sex

Does a male and female couple who both have HIV/AIDS still need to have protective sex?
If so please tell why.

Yes, this is because there are different strains of HIV which are always mutating, since it's considered a very intelligent virus. Becuase of this, if the female were to have HIV type "A" and the male to have HIV type "D," for example, they can trade the HIV strains they each have, which would weaken the immune system that much further.

Of Course! Because one partner might be more infected than the other. This can cause the other person to become more infected it they are in a earlier stage than the other.

c....im guessing
2 :
A there was and still is a lot of discrimination. B these treatments are complex, but helpful C this is true d HIV meds can be picked up at a pharmacy, but you must take them as prescribed.
3 :
B! learned it in history, 100% sure
4 :
I would choose B!
5 :
B is true--i met an HIV patient who needed to carry around a small suitcase full of pills to deal with the infection and the side effects of the antiretrovirals A-people definitely had even more of a stigma than there is now C-some countries have specific laws promoting discrimination D-there are many drugs that can be taken at home or anywhere and that can be picked up at a pharmacy with a prescription
6 :
a)not true...many/most were b)not necessarily true, most first and second line regimens have in recent years reduced the pill burden...some are even lucky enough to be able to take a one pill/day regimen. Though later regimens can be more difficult and involve more pills c)I don't know about every state passing laws, but HIV was 'read into' to Americans with Disability Act....and I think that is federal (I am from Canada, and I am getting this info from Philadelphia with Tom Hanks.....I can't see the movie getting this wrong.......So I don't know about EVERY state... d)Define 'administered'.....if it means you actually have to receive and take your pill at a clinic or hospital this in NOT TRUE. However, you must be prescribed the meds by a licensed physician and can get the meds just like any other...at the pharmacy.

I am interested in becoming an HIV/AIDS activist .How do I begin

I am interested in becoming an HIV/AIDS activist .How do I begin?
I live in Philadelphia and would like to become a voice in the fight against AIDS.

Philly has a lot of community-based organizations that advocate for the Poz community. One that I found was FIGHT http://www.fight.org Volunteering with an organization is a good start. They will teach you a lot. I see you want to start an organization of your own. While that's a noble intention, it's difficult ot start a new org. It's better to sign on with an established organization whose goals are in line with your own. They are often better funded (funding is hard!) and have more political clout, meaning you can accomplish more in terms of interventions and policy. PROF SAM: This question was about community involvement and advocacy and had little to do with the nature of AIDS and HIV at all. If YOU want BOB to join your side of the debate, you could've described how your side gets involved in the community and the roles you play as an organization outside of Y!A
2 :
Hi Bob. I first want to commend you for your nobel gesture. Contrary to other people who might try to convince you that you should probably abandon the Idea because " AIDS does not exist to them", I think you are on the right track. I dont know a lot about Philly bu t i know that the start is with a Volunteers' organization near you. This will help you understand better the inner workings of the AIDS community and you will learn how to request for grants and funds. Most importantly it will give you first hand experience with People Living with HIV and AIDS. (Its an experience that might totally change your life). I was running a volunteers AIDS clinic in Africa (Uganda) for a couple of years and I would suggest that if you have the resources, you should travel to Africa for a couple of months. ( The Marine corps have a part for this kind of experience. You can also check out the VSO canada website http://www.vsocanada.org which also pays you). There are also other ways you can help like helping in Washington to lobby for funds for AIDS organizations, or lobbying with pharmaceutical companies to make AIDS drugs free to all or subsidize the market.
3 :
You can start right here, and similar sites on the web. If you search for questions with HIV or AIDS as a keyword, you find that a majority of the questions asked in the past month have been SPAMed by Paul King (AKA pk_dag), Prof Sam, and a few other people who came here from the MSN Dissident Action group to convince schoolchildren that HIV does not exist, and that condoms are dangerous. The best we can do to fight the pandemic, until save, affordable and effective vaccines are available is to educate people about HIV. If you do not get infected, you do not need a cure, or expensive treatments. Paul King and other so-called "dissidents" deny that any solid research has been done on the link between HIV and AIDS. They are wrong, but insist on "educating" the public that their false beliefs are the "truth". They have had small impacts in the USA so far, but have done enormous damage in South Africa.
4 :
Well, your position on the science of 'HIV/AIDS' will determine what sort of AIDS activist you become... You can become an AIDS Apologist activist and oppose the health and human rights of consumers to be fully informed in their consent or dissent on a life and love-altering matter. AIDS Dissenters or Dissidents like me are providing AIDS alternative health and dissenting scientific resources and information to the consumer, standing in 'HIV' testing lines outside of clinics or festivals, sometimes using guerilla tactics posting on AIDS Apologist websites, etc. since we do not have the multi-million dollar budgets of the AIDS Industry. We think it's worth it to fight for lives and loves, since that is what is 'at risk' here, Bob. If you're open to questioning the 'HIV/AIDS' theory or model, you can have an important voice, in empowering the consumer with both sides of the story. Afterall, people are making life and love-altering decisions based on the 'HIV' test and 'AIDS' diagnosis, so they have to be certain they are valid or meaningful medical markers, right? AIDS Dissidents do not tell people what to think or do. However, the AIDS Apologists oppose these basic health and human rights and feel they should decide in behalf of others; what information and resources to withold from the consumer. Did you know, hundreds of scientists, doctors including Nobel Laureates and Members of the National Academy of Sciences and thousands of journalists, academics, consumers and advocates around the world, are raising critical questions about everything we thought we knew about 'HIV' and 'AIDS?'

How many children are born with HIV/AIDS

How many children are born with HIV/AIDS?
A mother can pass AIDS from herself to her child during birth, so i want to know approximately how many children are born with AIDS every year/day/month/or whatever you know or could find. Could some of the kids I know have AIDS? Just curious (: Thanks

MILLIONS IN AFRCIA ITS LIKE EVERY MINUTE A CHILD IS BORN WITH AIDS YES KIDS YOU NO COULD HAVE IT
2 :
Could you know anyone who got HIV from their mom? Maybe, but probably not. In 1992, 855 babies were born with HIV in America. In 2005, there were 57 babies born with HIV in America. Fortunately for us, perinatal HIV is really rare now because we have access to medical care. CDC has all the info on American babies born with HIV http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/perinatal/ But for worldwide numbers it's different because you have to consider Africa and Asia. There are no solid statistics for the number of babies born with HIV worldwide, but UNAIDS does have figures to show how many people with hIV are under the age of 15. At the end of 2002, an estimated 3.2 million children worldwide under age 15 had HIV. For more on that, check out http://www.thebody.com/content/treat/art6573.html Without medications, the chances of a mother passing HIV to her baby are about 1 in 3. With medications, you can reduce those odds almost to
zero.
