Why is HIV/AIDS commonly associated with the gay community

Why is HIV/AIDS commonly associated with the gay community?
I've heard about it before, but it wasn't explained. To me, it sounds like it's another ignorant comment by homophobics but i may be wrong. So, is there a real reason?

We apparently spread it through unprotected sex during the 80's. Of course it came from monkey hunters in Africa. HIV is a monkey related disease, monkey hunters would get infected with it.

unfortunately there is still a connection between the two. as you can see from the stats HIV is still occurring at a rate of 4.6 times in gay males than it occurs in straight males. Sad, but true. Here's the 2007 stats from the CDC. Transmission Category Estimated # of AIDS Cases, in 2007 and Adolescent Female Total Male-to-male sexual contact 16,749 Injection drug use 3,750 Male-to-male sexual contact and injection drug use 1,664 High-risk heterosexual contact* 4,011 Other** 181 *Heterosexual contact with a person known to have, or to be at high risk for, HIV infection. ** Includes hemophilia, blood transfusion, perinatal exposure, and risk not reported or not identified.
